In 2011 we moved to the country and began growing food on our land. We started with six peach trees that were soon decimated by the numerous deer that frequent our property. Not to be deterred, we planted trees again, this time protecting them from the deer and soon we enjoyed fresh peaches from our back yard. But, we began dreaming of doing more…
After extensive research and consultation, in the fall of 2015, we began to prepare our soil to establish a peach orchard. Our land had been a homestead for over a hundred years and had apparently been over-farmed. The soil was very poor and need amending before it could adequately support a peach orchard.
We added the required nutrients and lime (to adjust the soil pH) to the soil and then deep plowed the soil to get the nutrients down deep for the trees to use. We built an 8-foot high fence around our soon-to-be orchard to prevent the damage we had experienced from the deer previously. And, in 2016, we planted our orchard.
The trees have done remarkably well and we’re excited to be able to share some of their fresh fruit with you!
